This picture is part of a larger body of work where I photographed flowers with flash and from a low vantage point, in order to use the sky as a neutral backdrop, like the backdrops in photographer’s studios.
I started photographing flowers in 2005, using a low vantage point. Most flower pictures I’ve seen are taken from above, looking down, so I thought, why not reverse the point of view. It also allowed me to use the sky as a kind of minimal backdrop, like the gray paper backdrop in a photographer’s studio.
