Investing in the Places That Bring People Together
Some of the most important investments in a public facility are not always the most visible.
Several noteworthy projects are currently underway across the Franklin County Convention Facilities Authority’s (FCCFA) facilities, supported by its Capital Program. The program funds ongoing improvements to the Greater Columbus Convention Center, Hilton Columbus Downtown and Nationwide Arena.
These investments in building systems, infrastructure, safety, accessibility and the guest experience help keep the facilities reliable, welcoming and competitive.
The work ranges from major restoration projects to behind-the-scenes upgrades that keep each facility operating effectively. Together, these investments reflect the FCCFA’s responsibility as a public owner and its long-term commitment to protecting the community’s assets.
Greater Columbus Convention Center
A significant project currently underway at the Greater Columbus Convention Center is the facility’s first comprehensive roof restoration. The work involves applying a liquid membrane over the existing roofing system, extending its useful life and improving its performance. The membrane will replicate the roof’s seven existing colors, preserving the Convention Center’s distinctive appearance. Work began in July 2026 and is expected to be completed by summer 2027.
Other improvements are addressing the day-to-day function of the Convention Center. New high-speed fabric doors are being installed throughout the loading dock. By helping maintain temperatures on the docks and reducing delays, the doors will make move-in and move-out easier and more efficient for Convention Center clients. Two new high-efficiency boilers will improve the reliability and efficiency of the South Building’s heating system.
Elevator and escalator refurbishments will improve accessibility throughout the facility for all guests. Additional projects include ballroom lighting replacement and security upgrades.
Work along the West Connector and Ohio Center Way Bridge includes repairing beams, replacing expansion joints, patching and sealing concrete, improving drainage and repairing sidewalks and curbs. New traffic markings are also helping improve vehicle flow between the Convention Center and Hilton Columbus Downtown.
The FCCFA is also modernizing parking access and revenue-control systems across its six parking facilities to improve the overall guest experience. The work includes new self-parking kiosks at Hilton Columbus Downtown.
Hilton Columbus Downtown
At Hilton Columbus Downtown, the Capital Program supports regular improvements to both the original 401 tower and the newer 402 tower.
Current projects include upgrades to the 401 tower’s elevator system, improvements to the Spark Lobby Bar and replacement of soft goods in Gallerie Restaurant and the atrium. Additional investments are being made in mechanical systems, exterior doors, safety and security equipment, technology, offices, furnishings and food and beverage equipment.
Together, these investments will enhance the guest experience, improve dining options and comfort for hotel guests, and help the hotel maintain the quality needed to support Columbus conventions, meetings and major events.
Nationwide Arena
Current projects at Nationwide Arena address the facility’s most immediate capital needs while a larger renovation and modernization plan is being developed. That broader effort will address major building systems and components, as well as the Arena’s overall functionality.
Current projects include replacement of the fire alarm and fire pump systems, improvements to chilled-water and domestic-water pumps, air-handling unit upgrades and work on electrical systems. Additional investments include elevator and escalator improvements, maintenance lighting, parking garage upgrades, food and beverage equipment and updates to interior finishes.
The current work supports the Arena’s continued operation and a safe, reliable experience for guests, teams, performers and employees as planning for the larger investment moves forward.
Planning Beyond the Next Project
Capital planning is an ongoing process as facilities age, technology changes and guest expectations evolve. By regularly assessing its properties and setting priorities across the portfolio, the FCCFA can address immediate needs while preparing for larger improvements in the years ahead.
Whether replacing a critical mechanical system, improving how guests move through a building or restoring a defining architectural feature, each project contributes to the same goal: protecting the public’s investment in the places that bring people together and strengthen the region’s travel economy.
