Comprehensive Campus Master Planning Process Begins

The Franklin County Convention Facilities Authority (FCCFA) has launched a major planning effort to chart the future of its downtown Columbus campus. LMN Architects will lead the development of a long-term, campus-wide master plan, supported by Columbus-based MKSK and members of AECOM’s Columbus team.

The master plan will provide a long-term roadmap for the Greater Columbus Convention Center, Hilton Columbus Downtown, Nationwide Arena, parking facilities and the FCCFA-owned property available for future development. The process will examine how these assets function together today and identify opportunities to support the campus and Central Ohio’s continued growth.

“This master plan represents an important investment in the future of the FCCFA and the community we serve,” said Ken Paul, executive director of the FCCFA. “This planning process will help ensure we continue to meet the needs of our customers and visitors while positioning these public assets to support our region’s growth and competitiveness well into the future.”

The planning process is expected to take approximately 12 months and will include extensive analysis and engagement with public agencies, industry partners, community leaders, neighboring districts, the development community and community members.

Areas of study are expected to include potential convention center renovations, expansion and hotel development; campus functionality and sustainability; transportation and mobility; guest experience and placemaking; connections to surrounding districts; and long-term development opportunities on the FCCFA-owned property.

The FCCFA has worked with LMN for nearly two decades, including on a prior expansion and renovation of the Greater Columbus Convention Center and the planning studies involving the East Parking Lot and a potential passenger rail station. AECOM will oversee transportation planning and MKSK will review landscape design and urban planning.

The master plan is intended to evaluate opportunities, not predetermine specific projects or outcomes. Recommendations will be shaped by market conditions, operational needs, financial feasibility and stakeholder input.

The FCCFA will share additional information about the planning process, timeline and opportunities for engagement in the coming months.
